What is the NHL?

The NHL (National Hockey League) is the most elite, most talented group of professional ice hockey teams in the world. Comprised of 30 teams from across Canada and the United States, the NHL has attracted the best players from hockey powerhouse nations like Canada, Russia, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

The NHL was formed in 1917 from the Canadian National Hockey Association. The teams compete for the Stanley Cup - the oldest trophy contested for in any professional sport. The trophy was donated by Lord Stanley of Preston, former Governor-General of Canada, and was first awarded to Montreal AAA in 1893. Since 1927, the Stanley Cup has been presented to the victorious team at the end of the National Hockey League playoffs.

Playing in the NHL is the goal of every youngster who has ever held a hockey stick and laced up a pair of skates. There is not a single hockey player who has not dreamed of hoisting the Stanley Cup above their heads in victory and celebration.
